A goldsmith was kidnapped by abductors on Tuesday night, and his body was found in Dabaspet on Wednesday.  His abductors panicked when they found out that his wife had approached the police. Hence, they decided to kill him.

The victim, Nitesh Bera, 35, was a resident of Lakshmi Road in Shanthinagar. Bera was returning home from his jewellery shop near Christ Memorial Church on Avenue Road when a gang abducted him.

Bera, a native of Bandar village in Hoogly district, West Bengal, was married to Uma Bera and had two children — eight-year-old Nilesh and three-year-old Nilima. When Bera spoke to his wife at 9.25 pm on Tuesday, he told her that he was leaving office and would reach home in 10-15 minutes. When Bera did not return home, Uma called him again. Bera said he was in trouble and cut the call.

Bera cut her call thrice. After a while, Uma received a call from Bera’s cellphone. Bera told her that he would be sending a man home and instructed her to give him gold jewellery and cash.
As directed, Uma kept the cash and jewellery ready.
When a man arrived riding Bera’s scooter, she gave him the gold and cash. Uma told the police that she saw this man’s face, when he removed the helmet while speaking to her.
She told the police he spoke in Kannada and broken Hindi.
The police might use these inputs to draw a sketch of this man, who has a dark complexion.

However, the man allegedly threatened her and directed Uma to give more cash and jewellery. He told Uma that he would send a man to her shop to collect the money.

Initially, Uma agreed to this demand, but changed her mind. Uma told him that she would send one of her husband’s employees, Mithun, with the cash and jewellery to a hotel nearby. However, when Mithun showed up, the man fled.

A case of kidnap and murder has been registered in Ashoknagar police station.
