A 25-year-old woman, Raveeja, attempted suicide in her house after killing her eight-year-old daughter M Shahina on Friday.
Shahina was a Class II student. Investigations revealed that Raveeja was depressed as she lost her husband, Masthanaiah, two years ago.

To give her child a good education, Raveeja began working in a garment factory. But the factory did not pay her salary for months.Raveeja, unable to make ends meet, decided to take the extreme step, said H Veerabadhra Gowda, assistant commissioner of police (Banashankari sub-division).

The police said that Rajeeva strangled her daughter with a rope and then tried to end her own life using the same rope.

Her father-in-law Nagalingaiah found Raveeja hanging and immediately alerted his wife. He also spotted his grand child lying unconscious.

The husband-wife duo and a few neighbours took the unconscious mother and child to Victoria Hospital. Shahina was declared brought dead while an unconscious Raveeja is currently undergoing treatment.

Shahina’s body was handed over to the family after postmortem.
A case of murder and attempt-to-suicide has been registered against Raveeja in CK Acchakattu police station.
