A 44-year-old tailor, spinning out extra income by cheating people in the name of providing birth, death and other certificates, was arrested by the central crime branch (CCB) police on Tuesday.

Jayarama, a resident of Nagavarapalya, near Byappanahalli, had a dream run after he turned a middleman to offer certificates purportedly issued by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) till a CCB team formed to nab such criminals arrested him.

The accused became a middleman after he realised that people do not shy away from paying to get birth and death certificates. Initially, he helped people get certificates from designated BBMP offices.

With the magnitude of brokerage widening, Jayarama entered the crime world and started arranging various certificates using fake BBMP seal and letterhead. He pocketed Rs500-Rs1,000 for each certificate.

Meanwhile, CCB police came to know that some fake BBMP certificates have been issued. They suspected the involvement of a gang in the case. However, a thorough investigation revealed that it was Jayaram who was behind the fake BBMP certificates.

A CCB police team formed by deputy commissioner of police (crime) Krishnaraju arrested Jayarama from his Nagavarapalya residence on Tuesday. They seized fake letterheads, certificates, seals and other equipment from him.

“We are questioning him to get more details. We suspect that he might be getting help from others to run the racket,” said an investigative officer. CCB police have filed a complaint with Byappanahalli police station.
