When Rajamma offered Lakshmamma free accommodation at her house in Sarjapur a year ago, she never thought that the latter would kill her daughter’s fiancé.

Police said Lakshamma, 35, along with her 23-year-old lover Narayana Reddy, plotted the  murder of Krishna Kumar, 25, the man who was to marry Mallika, Rajamma’s daughter, on August 16.

They felt Kumar’s alliance with Mallika would impede their relationship. Reddy carried out the plan, police said, but added that the duo’s evil design started failing soon after Kumar’s murder.

Both of them were now languishing in separate prison cells.
Lakshmamma, police said, had earlier made a futile attempt at coaxing Mallika into marrying Reddy. The woman hoped to continue the lecherous relationship with Reddy, if they shared the same roof.  Her plan, however, failed as Mallika, already betrothed to Kumar, refused the suggestion. It was then Lakshmamma plotted to eliminate Kumar. She hoped that Mallika would marry Reddy once Kumar was killed.

Reddy, a native of Bellamadagu, near Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, approached Kumar on July 12 with murderous intent, and offered a building contract in Kolar. A credulous Kumar took Reddy to Kolar on his two-wheeler. The men relaxed at a Kolar bar for a while, before proceeding to Alepalli, a forested area in Andhra Pradesh. Police said Reddy slit Kumar’s throat with a sharp weapon, and rode back to the city.

Muniraju, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Yelahanka, was a disturbed man on July 13. His son, Kumar, who had left home the previous day, had not returned. After waiting for a few hours in the hope of hearing from Kumar, the elderly man went to the Yelahanka police and lodged a “man-missing” complaint.
Police sent Kumar’s photographs to all police stations within and outside the state.

The Byreddipalli police were trying to identify an unknown body found in Alepalli, when they received Kumar’s photograph. Finding similarities, they informed the Yelahanka police, who took Muniraju to Byreddipalli, where the elderly man identified his son’s body.

The police soon found out that Kumar was engaged to Mallika. Further probe revealed that Lakshmamma –  and her paramour Reddy – had been missing. They were picked up on Monday from Andhra Pradesh.

Police said Rajamma had been providing shelter to Lakshmamma ever since the latter arrived in the city a year ago from Tamil Nadu. The accused woman was a housekeeper at the Rohan Vasanth Apartment in Marathahalli.
