A first of its kind in Karnatak: High court chief justice declares assets

The chief justice of the Karnataka high court, Jagdish Singh Khehar, declared his assets and liabilities Saturday and it was published on the court’s website. He is the first chief justice of Karnataka to make such a declaration.

As per the declarations made by Justice Khehar, he has `74 lakh cash deposits in various banks.

These include Rs31,06,266 as provident fund deposited after his elevation to the post. The other deposits are in the Union Bank of India, Chandigarh, in three separate accounts for Rs40 lakh, UCO, Delhi, for Rs2 lakh, and ING Vysya Bank, Bangalore, for Rs1.39 lakh.

Justice Khehar also owns a six-bedroom bungalow in Sector 8-B, Chandigarh, as immovable property. Apart from this, he owns 10 acres of agricultural land at Kailon, SAS Nagar, Punjab, and a two-bedroom residential flat in Mayur Vihar, New Delhi, which was acquired before his elevation as a judge.

In addition to these, he owns 1,250 yards of agricultural land in Laldran, near Mohali in Punjab.

Among movable property, Justice Khehar owns a Cielo car; one pistol gifted by his paternal grandfather; 125 tolas of jewellery,
including gold and silver; electronic gadgets like computer, cameras, television sets, VCR, washing machine, microwave, vacuum cleaner, music systems, etc and furniture and furnishings.

Justice Khehar also made it clear that the assets and liabilities that have been declared were owned by him before his elevation as judge, and after that he has been receiving only the salary and perks.

Justice Khehar, along with his assets, also declared property owned by his spouse, Madhupreeth Kaur Khehar. As per the declaration, she owns a plot measuring 3080 sqft in Garshanker, Punjab.

Meanwhile, KN Puttegowda, president of the Bangalore Advocates’ Association said, “It is the first time that a chief justice of the Karnataka high court has declared his assets. This is a welcome move. This sets an example for other judges as well. They also should do the same thing. This will uphold the faith of common man in the judiciary.”
