Over 50 children were taken ill after consuming mid-day meals at St Joseph’s High School in Kankanady on Thursday.
According to school authorities, the children complained of vomiting sensation and stomach ache minutes after consuming the mid- day meal, comprising rice and sambar. The ailing students were shifted to Fr Muller Hospital.
Hospital authorities said that the children fell sick after consuming food prepared using outdated cereals and pulses. The children showed signs of recovery after treatment.
Some students were given a thorough bowel wash-out; thirteen students are still admitted in hospital while others have been discharged.
The school senior teacher, Sr Sheryl said that 150 children and a few teachers also consumed the mid-day meals, but not everybody was affected.
“It appears that the food which was served to a particular section had gone bad, due to which 50 children had to suffer. The school has entrusted a group of local women to prepare food for the schoolchildren. The same group prepares food for few other schools in the area,” she said.
