Over 2,000 unemployed youngsters assembled on the Venkat International School premises seeking jobs on Sunday. The Karnataka Government Employment and Training Department and the Skills Development Corporation had organised the Bruhat Udyog Mela to create job opportunities for those unemployed in the city.

Minister for urban development, Suresh Kumar, said, “Unemployed youth are not only a burden for the family, but also to the society. This mela has over 7,000 job opportunities that need skilled youth. But, most of the applicants have an engineering background. The demand, however, is for IT diploma holders.”

“Education today has become like farming. When one farmer grows sugarcane, all the others follow him and when the cane does not fetch them a good price, they burn it down and stage a protest. Likewise, when one student decides to take up software, the rest follows suit. Some lucky ones get employed, while others are left out. We, as a responsible government, need to find a constructive solution for this,” he said.

Over 70 companies took part in the mela. “There are counselling counters here. If candidates are not sure where to apply, they can take guidance at stalls. We also help in making resumes for candidates who do not know how to make one. The companies have been given rooms in the schools, where the interviews are being held. Those selected will be given appointment letters immediately," he said.

Those who walked out empty-handed need not worry either. The mela organisers will be creating a database and forwarding their resumes to other companies.
