A 17-year-old girl who had scored 96% in II PUC examinations hanged herself to death at her residence in Vijaynagar on Tuesday night, after she failed to get an MBBS seat during the recent round of counselling conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).

Akshata Bolar, who passed out of II PUC from KLE college in Rajajingar in the recent examination held in April, was keen on pursuing a career in medicine.

Daughter of Dr Kishore Bolar and lecturer Subha Rani, Akshata, however, landed a BE seat at the KEA counselling. But that was not enough consolation for a distraught Askhata, who took the extreme step late on Tuesday night at her residence in Binny Layout, Vijaynagar.

She hanged herself to the ceiling fan in her room, when her mother was busy with domestic work.

The girl reportedly did not take up the BE seat though the parents had asked her to take up the BE seat temporarily as she stood a great chance in getting an MBBS seat in the casual round of counselling.

Akshata was reportedly keen on taking up an MBBS seat as she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father. Dr Bolar was on his way to Chennai when he received a call from his wife, about his daughter having committed suicide.

The jurisdictional Vijaynagar police, who were informed of the incident at 9pm on Tuesday, rushed to the spot. The girl’s body was handed over to her parents on Wednesday afternoon, after a post-mortem examination was conducted on it at the Bowring hospital. Askhata was cremated later in the evening.

The Bolars’ residence, “Classic Shelters”, in Vijaynagar wore a deserted look. Akshata’s relatives said the parents were too disturbed to talk to the media.

A relative said: “Akshata was very keen on joining MBBS and she had not done well in the CET examination. This had left her dejected.”

Another relative recalled that Akshata was a very bright student.
“Akshata’s mother has been losing consciousness repeatedly after the shocking incident,” the relative added.
