The election from the Bangalore graduates constituency will be held on Sunday, with the term of the current MLC Ramachandra Gowda (BJP) coming to an end on June 21. The legislative council constituency includes Bangalore urban, Bangalore rural and Ramnagar districts. Counting of votes will be done on June 13.

The number of registered voters in the constituency has almost doubled to 1,10,565 from last time. Though the number of registered voters is never an indication of those who will actually cast their them, this is particularly true of graduate constituency elections. For instance, of the 60,000 registered voters, only 20,000 cast votes last time.

The main candidates among the 16 contestants are Ramachandra Gowda, who has been the MLC for the last 24 years, KS Lakshmi of CPI (M), who is contesting for the second time, Ashwin Mahesh of Lok Satta Party, who is supported by personalities such as former Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde, and Congress candidate Ramoji.

The election is being closely watched by political analysts who, in the light of the engaged campaigning and efforts to get more graduates to register themselves as voters, see the poll as a precedent to upcoming elections.

Sandeep Shastri, political analyst, said: “The educated have been hiding behind a mask of cynicism. While they want democracy, they refuse to get into the politics of it. Though those who are going to cast their votes are only a fraction of the graduates in the city, that more people are aware of the election is a positive sign.”

MG Krishnan of Bangalore University’s Political Science department said: “The number of registered voters does no say anything as it is miniscule.”
