An 11-year-old girl died under suspicious circumstances in a city hospital on Monday. The victim, Meenakshi, was a student of a school run by an orphanage.

Meenakshi’s father and relatives allege that her kidney might have been stolen as they found incision marks on her abdomen.
The Mahalakshmi Layout police have registered a case after MLA NL Narendra Babu brought the case to their notice.

Meenakshi was a resident of Kurubarahalli, near Mahalakshmi Layout, and was staying in Auxilium Navajeevana Society’s orphanage in Goripalya for the past two years. She was a class VI student.

Meenakshi’s mother Kaveramma, a daily-wage labourer, died two years ago. Her father Shankarappa, another labourer, is an alcoholic. Hence, she was admitted to the orphanage.

Narendra Babu told DNA that recently, Meenakshi fell ill and was admitted to the hospital. She died on Monday morning. The medical report stated she died due to cardiac- and kidney-related diseases. But there is an incision mark on the right side of her abdomen, which has given her relatives enough ammunition to allege that a surgery was conducted and her kidney removed.

“The girl’s father and relatives allege that somebody stole her kidney. I saw an incision mark on the abdomen. The police should investigate to determine the cause of death. I have requested Mahalakshmi Layout police to register a case. I have also approached the women and child welfare department to conduct an inquiry,” said Babu.

Auxilium Navajeevana Society’s director Jacintha Lobo told DNA that Meenakshi was admitted to hospital when she complained of discomfort in her throat.

“On Wednesday, we came to know that the girl had a father. We found him and informed about his daughter’s health. He also visited the hospital. The girl died at 3am on Monday. All reports regarding her treatment was handed over to him,” said Lobo.
Deputy commissioner of police (north) HS Revanna confirmed that the police are going to register a case.

“Mahalakshmi Layout police registered a case of unnatural death report and shifted the body to a hospital for postmortem. An autopsy will reveal the cause of death,” Revanna told DNA.

He also added that these days, stealing kidneys is a rare practice. But since there is an allegation, the police will investigate.
