Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa has already assured the BJP leadership that he would step down if found guilty for his role in the alleged land scam in the state. Now, in a fillip to his political prospects, BJP’s national president Nitin Gadkari has backed Yeddyurappa, saying that the party would initiate action only after the charges are proved.

On Thursday, Yeddyurappa rushed to New Delhi to brief party leaders about the political situation in the state.

The BJP bosses, referring to his spat with BJP MP Ananth Kumar some days ago, warned Yeddyurappa, instructing him to take everybody into confidence.

The party rejected dissolution of the Assembly, while favouring for a change in leadership in case Yeddyurappa is charge-sheeted. Terming it as a routine visit, Yeddyurappa said that no significance should be attached to his visit to Delhi. “I was duty-bound to meet party higher-ups and brief them on the political situation in the state and also to seek their guidance,” he told reporters after meeting his ministers here on Saturday.

State BJP chief KS Eshwarappa, too, dismissed as speculation that the state was heading towards mid-term polls in the wake of political instability faced by the government.

“There is no change of guard. We will work under the leadership of Yeddyurappa in the coming two years. The opposition parties are trying to create confusion in the minds of people about mid-term election,” said Eswarappa.

In the meeting with his ministers, Yeddyurappa discussed details of the proposed BJP rally on February 20 in Palace Grounds. Gadkari is slated to inaugurate the rally.

Apart from celebrating completion of 1,000 days in office, Yeddyurappa wants to use the rally as a show of strength. “The rally cannot be viewed as a preparation for mid-term assembly election, but for the polls that’s due in 2013,” said Eshwarappa.
Meanwhile, Eshwarappa defended the understanding struck with the political rival JD (S) to gain control of Mysore Zilla Panchayat.
He described it as an arrangement between local leaders.
