Ten students of a city college were injured, three of them seriously, when the bus that was taking them to Kodagu for a study trip toppled at West of Chord Road on Saturday morning.

Forty students of Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra (GKVK), along with seven members, of the college staff were in the bus. Three of the 10 injured have sustained fractures: one on hands, one on leg and one on neck. Except these three, all other injured were discharged after treatment in the out-patient department of a hospital. The police said all of them are out of danger. The driver is absconding.

But the GKVK authorities sought to play down the accident. When DNA contacted the GKVK vice-chancellor on Saturday evening, he said he did not know about the incident as he was not in Bangalore. Other officials of the institution dismissed the accident as nothing serious. B Malik, dean of University of Agricultural Sciences, said the students are covered under medical insurance from the college.

The accident took place about 7.55am, when the bus was passing through the underpass near MC Circle. The bus driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed it on the median of the road and hit the electrical pole. The speeding bus toppled sideways. The local people and commuters shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.

The bus driver managed to escape from the spot after the accident. The bus belongs to city-based Sam Travels. Kamakshipalya police have seized the bus and registered a case against the driver and the travel agency. The police said the preliminary investigation suggested that the accident occurred because of the bus driver, who failed to control the vehicle as he was speeding. The police said the drizzling too might have contributed to the accident.

Traffic was affected at West of Chord Road for more than 30 minutes after the accident. Fire department personnel and the police rushed to the spot and the bus was taken to the police station.

Trip turns into tragedy
The students were en route to Kodagu to attend a two-day conference in Ponnampet. The trip was cancelled after the accident. The trip comprised students of MSc (crop physiology) and PhD.

The journey started from GKVK’s Hebbal campus at 7am.
The injured students were identified as Sanjeevan, 30; Guru Murthy, 35; Parvathi, 27; Basavarajeshwari, 27; Narendra Kumar, 24; Imran, 21; Pruthvi, 21; Bhavitha, 30; Raja Lakshmi, 30; and Debina Sanasam, 22. Basavarajeshwari, Imran and Debina sustained fractures in the accident.
