Thousands of domestic workers plan to take out a rally from Banappa Park to Town Hall on Saturday to bring to light their long-pending demands.

The rally will commence at 2pm at Banappa Park and converge at Town Hall. Speaking to the media here on Friday, Sister Celia, national core team member of the National Platform for Domestic Workers (Karnataka), said more than 1,000 domestic workers are expected to participate in the rally on Saturday evening. “All the domestic workers will join the rally after attending work in the morning. The work at households will not be effected by the rally on Saturday,’’ said Sister Celia.

She said all domestic workers would stop work on Sunday, demanding a central legislation for the benefit of domestic workers. “Thousands of domestic workers across the state will stop working on Sunday demanding the government to meet their long-pending demands,’’ she said.

Stating that a large section of domestic workers come from vulnerable communities and backward areas, she said: “Most of them are poor, illiterate and poorly regulated. Lack of decent wages, working conditions and a defined work time with violence, abuse and sexual harassment at the workplace along with victimisation at the hands of traffickers/placement agencies, forced migration, lack of welfare measures and a lack of skill development avenues resulting in stagnation, are the major issues that domestic workers have been facing’’.

The National Platform for Domestic Workers had submitted a memorandum of non-negotiable demands of domestic workers to the MPs from Delhi and ministers last April. The demands include, enacting legislation to regulate employment conditions of work and provide social protection (wage fixation, leave facilities, dispute resolution, health insurance, provident fund, pension, child care and housing), setting up tripartite board for overseeing effective implementation of the Act, ensure compulsory registration of workers with the board etc.
