Back-breaking drives on dreary blacktopped roads may soon be a matter of past. A pilot project has been taken up to white-top one-km stretch of Hosur Road from Kendriya Sadan Junction (Ayyappa temple junction) to Madiwala.

White-topping a road involves laying a concrete surface and giving it a white coating. A white-topped road will not only be pothole free, but also skid resistant and will reduce fuel and maintenance expenses.

The BBMP has, in association with cement manufacturers association, taken up the task of “white-topping” the Hosur Road stretch.

The demo project began three days ago and will be completed in another three days.

Cement is being provided free for the project by ACC, India Cements and Ultra Tech Cement.

White-topping is a widely used practice by many municipal corporations across the US and Europe. Even in India, the Mumbai municipal corporation has white-topped some of the megapolis’ roads.

“The main advantage is that the concrete road can be laid on the existing bitumen road by merely scraping the surface,” member-secretary of the Task Force for Quality Assurance in Public Works said.

Task force member CS Vishwanath said that white-topped roads have a 25-30 years’ life with zero maintenance, unlike blacktopped roads that have a life span of   5-10 years. Bituminous roads require frequent maintenance due to wear and tear, water logging, and potholes. Concrete roads won’t furrow as is the case with blacktopped roads, he explained.

In areas like Malleswaram, frequent blacktopping of roads has resulted in the road levels being higher than the floor level of houses, resulting in rainwater flooding the houses.
