For all you cleanliness freaks, here is a fun way to get recognised. JGI Community Radio, Radio Active CR 90.4 MHZ, in co-ordination with the Solid Waste Management Round Table (SWMRT), has organised Recyclothon — a competition for anyone and everyone who reuses recycles and reduces waste.

“It is a fun competition that allows everybody who is doing his bit to make the city green,” said Pallavi, an organiser.

“Schools, businesses, apartments, hospitals, hostels, hotels or even individuals — anybody can apply for the awards,” said Pinky Chandran, head, Community Initiatives and Radio Active CR 90.4 MHz, Jain Group of Institutions.

The idea, which was conceived and conceptualised by Radio Active, is open to anybody who wants to be a part of reusing, and recycling. “The key idea is to encourage the spirit of recycling in the city and also set a benchmark for fun and educative community programmes,” she said.

Radio Active has reached out to more than 400 such individuals.

“We have more than 89 schools, more than 150 apartments and more than 20 residents’ welfare associations practising waste management. We only want to spread the word so that more people involve themselves from now on,” she said.

There are four categories for the competition. Waste-wise school championship, which will be awarded to a school for operating an outstanding waste management programme. “We have recognised many schools that have been adopting waste management. We want more schools to start this practice so that children learn about waste management at school,” Pinky said.
The second category is for residents’ welfare associations. “This award is called ‘The waste-wise community award’.

There are over 100 apartments and over 250 houses that are already practising waste management. This competition will also aim at roping in more people,” she said.

The third category is for businesses and public services. “This championship is for developing outstanding and operating innovative waste management programmes at their businesses; best recycling programme on campus. We also have best dry waste recycling programme and best waste-wise small business award,” she said.

Last, a special award for general public for engagement with waste pickers and for exhibiting outstanding work in cleaning the city. “In addition to this, six special awards will be given to rag pickers in three categories, empowerment of fellow waste pickers, empowerment of their children and the best waste picker award,” she explained. The applications can be downloaded from www.swmrt.com.

“We want to discourage the use of paper. So anyone who is not net savvy can contact us and we will help them download and fill the forms,” Pinky said.
