Volvo drivers violate speed limit: Transport minister

282 vehicles were seized during inspection drive: Ramalinga Reddy.

Transport minister B Ramalinga Reddy on Saturday admitted in the council that Volvo buses in and around the state ply at 100 kmph, far exceding the the officially designated speed limit.

Responding to the question asked by Raghunathrao Malkapur, Reddy stated that the government has initiated move of vehicles inspection from October 31 and has inspected 17,820 vehicles and has registered 5,810 cases till December 3.

“Fines amounting to Rs 9 lakh and tax of Rs 1.79 crore is recovered and 282 vehicles were seized during the drive,” he added.

“All bus operators have been instructed to install emergency exits within three months and officials of transport department are in touch with Volvo to ensure of adoption of safety measures.

Adoption of speed governor is made mandatory for few type of transport vehicles with effect from Nov 29, 2013,” Reddy said.

Explaining the measures taken after recent incidents of fires  in Volvo buses at Mehbubnagar and and Haveri, the minister said the government had instructed bus companies to impart demonstrations on precautionary and safety measures to be taken during accidents, before start of the journey.

“Such demonstrations can be imparted to passengers orally or through video,” he said, adding that trainings would be provided at district headquarters to drivers of all type of passenger vehicles, in collaboration with companies like Volvo, Tata and Ashok Leyland.

“Following the incidents of fires, since a month, transporting of commercial goods on top of buses is banned in passenger vehicles,” he informed the house.

He said the government was awaiting a report from the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) before directing change in design of buses in consultation with manufacturers.

In Bangalore, Ramalinga Reddy said, 10 teams had been formed under stewardship of joint commissioner to inspect all heavy passenger vehicles. “Training programmes are already on from November 18 for driving licence applicants,” he said.
