John Vikram Martis, 34, from Bailakere village in Malpe, was among seven people killed when a suicide bomber drove a truck laden with explosives to the outer gate of a Nato compound in Kabul.

Martis was an employee of United Nations and had been deputed to Kabul to work as an accountant for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces deployed in Afghanistan.

Martis, who had been working in Afghanistan for the past four years, was to leave for Dubai on June 28 as he was posted on a new assignment there. He had to cancel his trip following a bomb blast at an Afghan airport on June 27. He then rescheduled his travel plans and was to leave for Dubai on July 4, but he got killed two days ahead of his journey.

Though the Nato forces are known to work in war savaged conditions, as Martis worked inside the office, his family were under the impression that he was in a safe atmosphere. However, as the bomb blast occurred within the NATO office, Martis was critically injured and died.

He is survived by his aged parents, two brothers, and a sister and he was planning to enter the wedlock in October after completing the first term of his new assignment in Dubai, said the sources in Thottam Church parish, to which he belonged.  This is the second incident of an Indian being killed in a Taliban attack in Afghanistan. In 2009, a civil engineer from Thekkatte near Kundapur, Bharat Naik, died when Taliban forces bombed a highway project office.

He had been working in that country since the last four years.

Mr Duffus was one of five security guards killed in the blast in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

After the blast, four gunmen stormed into the breach and engaged in an hour-long gunbattle with security guards and police.

The attackers were all killed, the interior ministry said.
