Tree felling: Orders to be passed on Thursday

In the matter pertaining to the felling of trees allover the City and planting of fresh saplings, the High Court will pass an order on Thursday. While hearing a suo motto petition initiated by the then Chief Justice D V Shylendra Kumar quoting newspaper reports stating that large number of trees are being cut in the City for road widening, the division bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice Ashok B Hinchigeri directed the amicus curiea to prepare the draft order and submit it on Thursday.

During Monday's hearing the counsel for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike submitted before the court that they have made available various details about tree saplings in their website. The information include number of saplings planted, its maintenance, growth etc, the counsel said.

The bench then directed amicus curiea to draft the order with suggestions and recommendations on what should be done on the tree saplings and submit it by Thursday.

The suo motto petition pertains to constituting a tree authority and maintaining the saplings in the city. In the previous hearings, the court had directed to constitute a tree authority and also asked BBMP to get information the number of trees planted in the City and also chalk out an action plan for maintaining them. The Court had also directed the State to appoint tree guards in the City.

The suggestions made by amicus curiea will be taken into consideration before passing the final orders.
