Trafficked Rwandese woman finds a way out

A woman who was trafficked from Uganda to Delhi, and later escaped to Bangalore only to be met by a similar fate, finally found a way out of her misfortune with the help of a student from Ivory Coast.
The 23-year-old woman, of Rwandese origin, was living in Uganda, came to India three years ago when a neighbour, Rehema, assured to help her find a job in Delhi.

In January 2012, the woman landed in Delhi along with Rehema and one Jack. Police said the woman used to live with Rehema, who kept her passport and other documents with him. He her forced into prostitution.

In February 2012, the woman managed to escape from her captors and came to Bangalore. She took shelter in the house of Benneth Afamefuna, who owned a barber shop in Kammanahalli.  

Here too she was subjected to sexual harassment as Afamefuna raped her a few times. She endured the misery till December 2013, when she finally confided her woes in the foster of a church in Kammanahalli.

The foster introduced her to a college student from Ivory Coast, with whom she stayed after managing to escape from Afamefuna. The student helped her to get in touch with the ministry of home affairs (MHA) and contacted the Ugandan government.

On the MHA’s behest, the CID came to the rescue of the woman. Police said they are making arrangements to send her back to Uganda.
