The purpose of starting new traffic police stations in the city seems to have been defeated as, owing to lack of facilities, these new stations still depend on nearby police stations to discharge their duty, including registering complaints.

The state government had, in its budget for 2012-13, decided to set up new traffic police stations. Three of them have started—in Jalahalli, Kengeri and Hulimavu—but hardly serve the purpose of micro-managing traffic-related issues as they have not been provided with even basic facilities yet.

Take the case of Kengeri traffic police station, whose jurisdiction comprises Rajarajeshwarinagar, Kengeri, Byataranyapura and Mysore Road. There are no tables or chairs, forget about computers, at the police station. A constable at the police station said they lodge cases in the registers manually.

Kengeri traffic police station is the only one among the aforementioned three new ones that has its own building. The newly carved out traffic police of Jalahalli and Hulimavu are currently operating from the office of law and order police of their area.

Staffers at Jalahalli traffic police, whose jurisdiction spans Jalahalli, Gangammanagudi and Soladevanahalli, register cases at Yeshwanthpur traffic police station as they do not have facilities even for registering cases. This reporter visited the police station on Sunday and found that the chamber allotted to the traffic police is still under renovation. A traffic constable said basic facilities have been brought, but were yet to be installed.

A road accident in Jalahalli traffic police limits on Saturday revealed the inorder. It was only after a lot of confusion that it was established that the area where the accident took place comes under the jurisdiction of Jalahalli traffic police. The contact details of the police station are not easily available. The case was registered at Yeshwanthpur traffic police station.

Hulimavu traffic police station has the same sorry tale as that of the one in Jalahalli. All cases coming under Hulimavu traffic police’s jurisdiction are registered at Mico Layout traffic police station. A police official at Mico Layout traffic police station said the building is still being renovated.

Jalahalli and Hulimavu traffic police stations have not been equipped with a telephone number and even the police control room takes minimum 15 minutes to give you the correct number through which officials of these police stations can be contacted.
‘It’s not that bad’

Regardless of these conditions, additional commissioner of police (traffic), MA Saleem, says all the three new traffic police stations are fully functional. He said one inspector has been deputed at every station, but minimal staff has been appointed for the time being. He said inauguration of these stations would take some time as they were looking for separate building for Jalahalli and Hulimavu traffic police stations.
