Now, Bangaloreans can track their Bangalore Metropolitan transport Corporation (BMTC) buses just by sending an SMS through their mobile phones. A private software company, iTrans Technologies (India), is beginning a trail on 10 BMTC buses and track them through GSM technology from Wednesday, at SG Balekundri Circle.

The officials in the company said that they have been supported with a proper database of the number of buses, route numbers, bus numbers and their frequency by the BMTC.

One just needs to send an SMS mentioning the bus route number and the bus stop, where the commuter is waiting, to a dedicated number which tracks the bus.

The sender of the message will immediately get a response on the status of the bus, whether it is moving or stationary, its location at that point in time and the distance from the bus stop. The buses will be fitted with a tracking device.

Live demonstrations will be made on these 10 buses on Wednesday morning at Balekundri Circle. Beginning Wednesday, the technology will be used for tracking 10 buses on random routes across the city for a trial period. The organisation is currently tracking Chennai bound buses on behalf of KSRTC.
