A lot of good films, some thought-provoking performances and infectious bon homie marked the first day of the B’lore Queer Film Festival (BQFF) 2013 at the Alliance Francaise on Friday.

Keep The Lights On, an American film by Ira Sachs, which told a compelling tale of two men in New York City dealing with love, friendship and addiction, followed a hard-hitting yet humorous performance by Sahil Farooqi. An artist, performer, writer, music enthusiast and dancer living in Brooklyn, Farooqi had the audience gripped right at the start of his tale about being gay. Most of the men couldn’t agree more to his remarks about the stages of excitement, loneliness, and desperation.

Saturday screenings will begin at 9 am with Body at Large, a Taiwanese film exploring the subject of discrimination against people who bend gender norms.
For true-blue queer film aficianados, there are 24 movies to devour besides the ongoing photography exhibition and the launch of a queer fiction book. It is also a big day for queer films made in India with five of them screened through the day. One of them, Love is All You Need, by Bangalore-based Diana Morris will screen at 2.45 pm.

“Isn’t love all that we need? The film, which tells the story of three people bound together by a startling secret, poses this question,” the director said.

Another must-watch film is the neo noir Motionless Explosions from Belgium. This film, which talks about the life of gay people in a fictitious city, set in a period between 1948 and 1958, will be screened at 8.15 pm. Pakistani film, Transgenders: Pakistan’s Open Secret, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, will be screened at 5 pm. It follows the life of three transgenders living in Karachi.
