Syed Imran is the poster boy of corporate social responsibility. The oldest inmate of Child Care Centre of SAP Labs that supports underprivileged children by providing them food, shelter and education, Imran will soon be graduating as an engineer. He came to the centre as a small boy when his father was in jail. SAP Labs supported him financially. But Imran too was driven by a fierce determination to excel in life in the face of all odds. In a tête-à-tête with DNA, Imran spoke out his heart.
How did you end up in Child Care Centre of SAP Labs?
Once someone sold stolen goods to my dad who was ignorant enough to purchase them. When police got the information, they arrested him and he had to spend a year in jail. I came from a poor family, everyone including me had to go out for work. I was seven years old when my father went to jail. I sold fruits by the roadside and bus stops to support my family. That was when a social worker helped me get admitted to an NGO which was then supported by SAP Labs. Later I was brought to the child care centre.
How did the centre support you?
Whatever I am today, it is all due to SAP Labs and its volunteers’ support and encouragement. If not for them, I would be an illiterate doing some menial jobs. I could have never dreamt of reading or speaking English and this was made possible only due to the SAP volunteers and staff at the centre who motivated and offered me emotional support. When I scored 86% in 10th grade examination, SAP Labs awarded me the ‘Best Student award’ which did wonders to my confidence.
How has your experience been with the centre over the years?
I have a lot of good memories growing up with SAP volunteers, child care centre staff and my younger friends at the centre. They are all like my own family members. Being in college, I miss the centre very much. Basically, the child care centre has been a home away from home.
Where are you studying and who motivated you to take up Engineering?
Currently, I am studying BE at Bangalore College of Engineering and Technology located at Chandapura, Hosur Road. Over the years, SAP volunteers had become my role models and I wanted to be just like them. This was my biggest motivation to take up Engineering.
What is your future plan? Anything that you would like to do for the underprivileged?
After my engineering, I would like to appear in civil services examination so that I can serve in the government and help the underprivileged sections of the society. Deep within me is the desire to help a lot of people who are helpless and need emotional and economic support as I have personally experienced the difficult life they lead.
