The three-day IT and electronics event, Bangalore ITE.biz, was inaugurated on Tuesday by chief minister Siddaramaiah. Speaking at the event, Siddaramaiah said the state government would extend all possible help and assistance for the development of information technology industry in the state, and all efforts would be made to make Bangalore the IT capital of the world.

The proposed Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) near Bangalore International Airport would generate lakhs of jobs directly and indirectly, he said. “The Central Government has given its nod for the proposed ITIR, which would be spread across 40 sq km, and the state government would leave no stone unturned to make it the most favoured destination for IT companies,’’ Siddaramaiah said.

The chief minister emphasised on the growth of IT companies in tier II and III cities in the state. “I am happy to see 30% of the IT companies in the country are situated in Karnataka. These companies provide jobs for nine lakh people,’’ the chief minister said.

Karnataka has recorded IT exports of over Rs 1.35 lakh crore during the financial year 2012-13, and the contribution of IT to Karnataka’s gross domestic product is more than 20%, he said.

“We have put in place policies for promoting semiconductor and electronic hardware manufacturing. These policies are expected to give a big thrust to chip designing, very large scale integration, solar photo voltaics, light emitting diodes, mobile handset and other electronic gadgets manufacturing,’’ Siddaramaiah said.

The chief minister added that the state released a policy on animation and gaming to give a big boost to this promising sector that has the prospects of reaching Rs 10,000 crore in revenues next year.

“The animation and gaming sector will further strengthen the IT prowess of the state.”

Earlier, IT minister SR Patil said the state government aims to provide assistance for 1,000 start up companies by 2020. “IT companies are expected to generate two million jobs by the year 2020,” Patil said.

Union minister for science and technology and earth sciences S Jaipal Reddy said Bangalore is the best destination for IT start ups. “I want the state government to emphasis on infrastructure development apart from providing facilities for starting IT companies,’’ the minister said.
