Thoroughfare near Seshadri Road is a hub for stalkers, anti-socials.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) spent lakhs of rupees to construct a pedestrians’ subway near SJ Polytechnic on Seshadri Road. The objective was to facilitate hundreds of government employees and University Visvesvaraya Engineering College (UVEC) students to cross Seshadri Road without any hassles. But, the subway has become a hub for stalkers and anti-social elements.
The BBMP authorities had provided electricity and ensured more than 20 lights to provide lighting at the time of inauguration. However, not a single light fitting is available at the subway. With most of the light fittings stolen by thieves, people have to find their way in the dark, through the subway.
The subway is also trapped in the cycle of Bangalore’s garbage menace, though it is ironically situated only a few hundred metres away from Freedom Park, where the BBMP spent lakhs of rupees to organise the ‘Wake Up Clean Up Bangalore’ campaign last February. “It was clean for a few weeks. No one has taken any measures to clean the accumulated garbage. We are using it because we have no other option. We can’t take risk of crossing the busy Seshadri Road,’’ Dr Prathibha, associate professor, Government Arts College.
Apart from empty liquor bottles and gutka packets being strewn around the subway premises, students have to cover their noses to avoid the stink.
“The condition of this subway is very bad. I demand the authorities concerned to do something to keep it clean,’’ said Saritha MA, a seventh semester student of UVCE.
Speaking to dna, M Gopi, corporator, Sampangiramanagar ward, said that he would direct the health department officials to clear the garbage immediately.
Narasimhulu, health inspector, Sampangiramanagar ward, had deputed a few pourakarmikas on Tuesday evening to clean the subway. The pourakarmikas were seen cleaning the subway with the help of torchlights.
