Hundreds of street vendors took out a rally from Bangalore City Railway Station to the Freedom Park protesting against the high-handedness of the city police, Bruhat Banaglore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) authorities.

The vendors, under the leadership of Federation of Bruhat Banaglore Street Vendors Associations, took out the procession demanding that the state government and the BBMP must provide exclusive zones to carry out their business.

Speaking with iamin, Rangaswamy CE, president, Gandhinagar Street Vendors’ Association said, “The street vendors have been harassed by police and BBMP and BWSSB authorities. They are evicting us on the pretext of clearing encroachments on the footpaths. They are depriving the livelihood of thousands of vendors in the city. It is against Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation) Act, 2014.’’

Rangaswamy said that around 200 street vendors in Shivajinagar have been prevented from carrying out their business from May 9. “We submitted a memorandum to Bangalore city police commissioner on May 19 but nothing has been done to address our woes,’’ he said.

He added that the traffic police have been harassing street vendors at Sirsi Circle on Mysore Road as well. “The traffic police have been misbehaving with us to such an extent that they sometimes spit on female vendors. According to him, the street vendors have been targeted at areas like Kaverinagar near Basaveshwara Nagar, HSR Layout and Lakshmi Devi Park in Koramangala. “We do not want to create hassles for pedestrians. We want the BBMP authorities to allot separate areas for us to carry out business,’’ he said.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to transport minister and Bangalore District In-charge minister Ramalinga Reddy and home minister KJ George demanding that the authorities stop eviction of street vendors immediately and facilitate them to carry their business at areas such as Shivajinagar, Kaveri Nagar, Sirsi Circle, Koramangala, HSR Layout and other places in the city. “We want the state government to introduce insurance, loan facility and social security for the street vendors,’’ he added.
