One of the main attractions at the latest edition of Krishi Mela was chillies, about 20 varieties of them, displayed by NUNHEMS, the brand name under which the seed giant Bayer Crop Science markets its products.
The unique feature of the chillies, Bayer claims, is that they are disease free, have high colour value, high level of pungency and yield. NUNHEMS markets both dry and fresh types of chilies.
The dry chilies are grown in the northern region of Karnataka and the fresh chilies are grown in southern Karnataka.
The chilli strains are preferred by powder and oleoresin industries as they have high resistance towards bacterial wilt. They have a smooth to semi-wrinkled texture and are in greater demand for their high shelf-life and keeping quality.
“NUNHEMS is a provider of hot pepper seeds. The chilies produced by our seeds are of very high quality and in great demand as the fruits are firm and have great texture,” says Madhusudhan, a NUNHEMS employee. These chilli seeds are of F1 hybrid and have a shelf life of 8-9 months. The chilies have a pungency value of 90,000SHU and colour value of 150-160ASTA.
“The quality of the seeds are excellent and I mostly purchase Priyanka seeds. These chilies are excellent as they are suitable for both dry and fresh purposes and have good colour value” says Balaji, a distributor. Lali is a NUNHEMS chilli used for making powder is the most expensive seed around, with the price being rupees Rs65,000 a kg. The cheapest variety of seeds are Nandi(fresh) that cost Rs26,000 a KG and Devanur Deluxe(dry) which is quoted at Rs 38,000 a kg.
“I always buy Devanur Deluxe seeds as they mature early and have medium pungency. These have good colour retention and are great for making powder,” says a farmer from north Karnataka.
