Veteran novelist SL Bhyrappa was one of the star speakers on the third day of Sahitya Sambhrama on Sunday.

“I wanted to become a philosopher, but decided to be a novelist at the age of 28,” said veteran novelist SL Bhyrappa, who was interacting with audience at Sahitya Sambhrama on Sunday.

“Though I wanted to become a philosopher like Dr S Radhakrishnan, I continued with novel writing in search of truth, following appreciations for Vaumsha Vruksha (his debut novel), which go translated into all the Indian languages,” Bhyrappa said.

He continued: “As I hail from a village, I am well acquainted with the caste system and focused on the same in another novel, Daatu. I received responses from many states and even Scotland, saying such system exists everywhere. When I was in North India, I used to stay for three-four days in remote villages to know the pulse of village life. Such study is a must for a novelist.”

Reacting to a question on anti-corruption crusader SR Hiremath, Bhyrappa said he is doing good work for mankind. “Hiremath is a good researcher. But if I join with him, as an author, I will collapse,” he said.

‘Ideologies will collapse’
Responding to a query on ideologies, Bhyrappa said if the government provides food, clothing, education and job opportunities to people, all ideologies will collapse by themself. “As we neglected Gandhian philosophy after Independence, we are now suffering from lack of economical growth.

But, Gandhi himself is responsible for this situation. Keeping aside Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gandhi brought made Jawaharlal Nehru the prime minister of India. He feared that Nehru would divide the Congress. Though 12 of the 15 Congress committees supported Patel, Gandhi supported Nehru because of his own fear,” Bhyrappa claimed.

He concluded saying: “I never wrote novels to create controversies. I am not responsible if someone or some organisation distributed copies of my novels without my consent.”
