The arrest, mercifully, has put an end to one of the most bizarre records ever seen. The woman identified as Shahanaz, 33, a resident of Chennai and a native of Kerala, allegedly married around 50 men with an intention of cheating them.
Her extraordinary crime was brought to light and her marrying-spree was halted when one of her husbands, who had married her after falling for her lies, filed a complaint with police claiming that his wife had cheated him.
The first complainant, identified as Manikandan, had befriended Shahanaz in a car showroom where he was working. Soon, Shahanaz revealed to Manikandan of her feelings for him; Manikandan fell in love; marriage followed.
After marriage, Shahanaz started implementing her plan. She asked Manikandan to secure her hostel accomodation as she claimed to be preparing for civil service exams. An unsuspecting Manikandan fulfilled her wish, only to realise later that he had been conned.
One of her tricks involved proposing marriage and later threatening men that she would commit suicide if they did not marry her. Most agreed and would end up getting cheated.
Shahanaz had come to Bangalore 15 days ago when a person, identified as Saravana, filed a complaint with police saying his wife by the name of Shahanaz was missing. Police, who had already received complaints from her other husbands, told him about the bitter truth.
After this complaint, Shahanaz escaped to Vellore and then to Andhra Pradesh before finally coming to Bangalore, where she was arrested by Chennai police from Majestic area.
As of now, police have received 15-20 complaints against Shahanaz.
