Supreme Court judge Justice Gopala Gowda, who was speaking at the inaugural function of Urban Krishi Mela organised on the University of Agricultural Sciences on Sunday, came down heavily on those invitees who were conspicuous with their absence.

Principal secretary of urban development Srinivasachari and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner  M Lakshminarayana were invited by the organisers as special invitees, but they did not turn up.

“One has to attend a function after agreeing to attend it. It is not good if they do not make it after their names get printed on the invitation card. The absence of such people will be an embarrassment for the organisers. I do not want to mention their names,’’ said Justice Gowda.

The small gathering also irritated Justice Gowda, prompting him to say that people must know the importance of the function.

“Krishi Mela is a very important event. The organisers arranged the inaugural function here, but many people are at the exhibition venue,’’ Justice Gowda said.

On the rise in onion prices, he said: “There are many reasons for the rise in essential commodities prices. The government is yet to enact Crop Pattern Act to regulate on what types of vegetables to grow and how much to grow. I think there is no price hike problem in China because there are rules on crop pattern,’’ he said.

Stating that it has become difficult for people to live owing to soaring prices of essential commodities, he advised people to adopt roof-top gardening to grow vegetables. On the occasion, principal secretary of the department of horticulture, MK Shankarlinge Gowda, said each person needs 300 grams of vegetables per day.

“I advise people to grow vegetables on roof tops. Such vegetables are very good for health. People should cultivate the habit of including more vegetables in their daily menu like the Chinese people do,’’ said Gowda.

Unexpected guest
While Justice Gopala Gowda was not happy with the invitees who did not turn up at the function, the organisers were in a surprise to receive an uninvited guest in BBMP deputy mayor Indira. As per the schedule, Indira was supposed to attend the valedictory function on Monday along with MLC Vimala Gowda, principal secretary to the chief minister DN Narasimha Raju and Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murthy. Meanwhile, an official of University of Agricultural Sciences said the BBMP agreed to be one of the sponsors for Urban Krishi Mela. “The BBMP commissioner did not attend the function. He even did not bother to depute BBMP officials to the function,’’ said the official.
