After receiving a conditional approval for Phase II project of Namma Metro, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) managing director N Sivasailam has tweeted that the tender process can be initiated for the project if acquisitions of  land do not face legal hurdles.

The MD, who is active on Twitter, replied to a query saying that the tender process can be initiated if land acquisitions do not face challenges from the affected people in exercising their rights.

BMRCL’s Phase II project has been mired in controversies and many residents and tech park owners have opposed the project fearing that their properties would be acquired. Residents of Jayadeva Interchange Metro Victims Forum had even urged the state government to take necessary steps to avoid the acquisition of private properties. Many tech parks owners too have opposed acquisition of properties for the project, saying that their business interests would  badly hit by the project.

BMRCL is estimated to spend Rs 1,977 crore for land acquisition. The new phase has a total length of 72 km and will have four extensions of the existing project: Mysore Road Terminal to Kengeri (6.46 km), Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield (15 km), Hesaraghatta cross to BIEC (3.77km), Puttenahalli Cross to Anjanapura Township (up to NICE road); and two new lines: IIMB to Nagawara (21 km including a 13.79 km underground stretch) and RV Road to Bommasandra (18.82 km).

The state government has already entrusted the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) to acquire land for BMRCL for implementation of Phase II. At a meeting on Tuesday, the Public Investment Board (PIB) had cleared the Namma Metro Phase II with a rider that  the approval of the project was subject to urban development department’s confirmation on availability of funds as per 12th Five Year Plan.

Now, BMRCL is waiting for the final approval of the Union Cabinet. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC),  which had prepared the DPRs for the Phase II project, had estimated that it would cost Rs 26,406.14 crore.
