As the ganesh puja draws closer all painted ganesha idols are seen across major idol outlets in city. But keeping in mind the ill-effects of lead content painted ganesha idols, city based National Referral Centre for Lead Projects in India (NRCLPI) is resorting to social media to generate awareness among youngsters and women organizations about the use of eco-friendly ganesha idols.

Like every other year, this year too the NRCLPI in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and the Crafts Council of Karnataka has begun with the awareness programme. Dr Venkatesh Thuppil, principal advisor, Quality Council of India and NRCLPI told dna: "We have been going around schools and delivering message to the students about the ill-effects of paints and the lead content in the ganesha idols to humans and water as well. These students are the ones who can take the message forward to their families and promote use of eco-friendly ganesha."

For the past few years, people in city have been a little conscious and have resorted to use of eco-friendly clay ganesha idols. To make it 100% success this year we have resorted to social media to spread the message. We have also been talking to women's organizations and also to teachers in schools based in city as most of them are very active in the social media groups, said yet another advisor with NRCLPI.

Meanwhile, as per the guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board, the KSPCB is also promoting use of eco-friendly ganesha idols. As per the guidelines, painting of idols should be discouraged, incase idols are painted, water soluble and non-toxic natural dyes should be used. Use of toxic and non-biodegradable chemical dyes for painting idols should be strictly prohibited. Use of traditional clay for idol making rather than baked clay, plaster of paris should be encouraged and promoted.
