Not a Karnataka resident? Be prepared to pay road tax if you own a vehicle

The transport department has intensified the drive to collect life time road tax from vehicles registered outside Karnataka after Karnataka High Court vacated a stay on the petition against collecting tax from vehicles registered in other states.

Some bad news for those who own vehicles registered outside Karnataka. The transport department is going to continue the surprise checks on vehicles registered outside the state. It may be recalled that transport department had recently conducted surprise checks on around 3,000 non-Karnataka-registered vehicles and seized more than 100 vehicles for failing to pay life time road tax.

These people have to pay the tax again in Karnataka, inspite of paying road tax in their registered states where the vehicles were purchased, .

Talking with iamin, S Praveen Kumar, a sales executive said, “I paid road tax in Chennai where I bought my two-wheeler. I was working in Chennai but I had to come to Bangalore since I got a job here. So I brought the vehicle along with me. The transport department officials stopped my vehicle on my way to work and asked me to provide my documents for verification. They asked me to pay Rs 8,700 as life time road tax.’’

The transport department officers have intensified the drive to collect life time road tax from vehicles registered outside Karnataka after Karnataka High Court vacated a stay on the petition against collecting tax from vehicles registered in other states.  There are lakhs of IT employees from outside Karnataka working at different companies in Bangalore. Some of them come to the city for barely a year or two but they have to pay the life time road tax that amounts to thousands of rupees.

“It is quite unfortunate that I had to pay the life time road tax. I may be shifting to Hyderabad by next year. The Karnataka Road Transport Department officials say that I can claim the amount paid here while leaving for Hyderabad. I have to visit the Road Transport Office again and stand in a queue to get a refund of the amount,’’ rues Kunal P, a software engineer.

Meanwhile, Rame Gowda, commissioner, transport department, has made it clear that the officials would continue the drive to collect the tax from owners of vehicles that are registered outside Karnataka. “We are following the rule. Even the High Court had vacated the stay on a petition filed against the collection of the life time road tax. We are not collecting the life time road tax if the owner of the vehicle uses it for just a month in the state,’’ said Gowda.
