The announcement of dates for the upcoming assembly elections has triggered hectic political activity in the Northern Karnataka region.

Ticket aspirants of all parties are rushing to Bangalore to intensify the lobbying to ensure tickets for themselves or their dear ones to contest the polls.

Members of urban local bodies, zilla panchayats, taluk panchayats and gram panchayats are also playing important roles in the lobbying for tickets for their favourable leaders. A municipality member, belonging to Congress party, in Koppal said that MLA or MLA-level leaders are suddenly in demand.

“Now, they will try to appease us as party leadership will take our opinion. They need our help in convincing our voters for the upcoming elections,” the municipality member added.

Comparing the situation with the previous assembly elections, Bapu Bharamgoudar, a progressive farmer in Yalavatti village in Gadag district, opined that the last time around, BJP was the only party that had demand for tickets and it was the only hopeful party after HD Kumaraswamy’s failure of keeping his promise of transferring power.

“In fact, Kumaraswamy was instrumental in igniting the Lingayats, who are the majority community in the region,” he added.

This time around, it is clear that the Congress and the JD(S) have emerged as major parties, encashing the BJP’s division into two regional parties—the BSR Congress and Karnataka Janata Party. The BSR Congress has also committed to put any kind of effort to control its damage occurred in the just-concluded ULB elections. That said, the Congress and the KJP have already been successful in proving their presence in certain districts like Gadag and Haveri, increasing their popularity.

A candidate from Bijapur district told DNA that he was leaving for Bangalore along with Rs10 lakh to convince his ‘winning capacity’ and was even prepared with the cash in case anyone needed to be bribed.
