Sand contractors and sand carrier truck owners in Mysore have opposed the state government's plans to supply sand to Bangalore from Cauvery basin.

The opposition has come in the wake of the State Truck Owners' Association president R Shanmugappa appealing to the deputy commissioner to allow truck owners to lift sand from Mysore district for use in Bangalore.

Sand contractors and truckers in Mysore have appealed to the deputy commissioner of Mysore district not to allow sand to be lifted from Cauvery basin or any other river basin in the district.

Speaking with dna, Mysore Sand Truck Owners' Association president Sosale Puttaswamy said: “We were shocked when the government planned to consider lifting sand from Cauvery and Kabini basins for Bangalore market.

“This would cause violation of rules that govern inter-basin transfer of minerals. Moreover, there is a shortage of sand in Mysore district, owing to which many infrastructure projects are being delayed, including roads, culverts, bridges and the housing projects in both government and private sectors,” he said, adding: “Due to the shortage of sand, employment guarantee and JnNURM projects too are suffering”.
