Move to install GPS in school buses get parents' nod

With the government making it mandatory for all school managements to install global positioning system (GPS) in the school transport vehicles, parents are a happier lot for with the decisions. Many schools in the city have already in place high end GPS systems with tracking and monitoring system along with the equal involvement of parents and school managements.

As many as 30 schools within the city and the suburban areas have installed an integrated child and school bus tracking and monitoring system to ensure safety and security of school children while commuting. Schools like Deens Academy, Indus International, Baldwin's Boys, Baldwin's Girls Methodist School to name a few have approved and are currently using the tracking and monitoring solution put forth by NorthStar, a Bangalore-based company.

According to parents the tracking and monitoring systems are mandatory for the safety of children while travelling to and from school and home. Sandhya Shridhar, parent, said "With the increase in assault cases of children during school hours, the mandatory rule of GPS in school buses is a much need move and as parents we welcome it. With GPS we can be sure of the travel route of our children in the school buses and know that the database is with the school management if any untoward incident takes place."

Prakash Kumar, parent and MNC employee, said, "Although the GPS monitoring system has been made mandatory in all schools, there is a need for latest technology where parents can be informed everyday about the school transport buses. Some international schools have adopted high end tracking and monitoring systems in the schools which must be adopted by the government and private schools as well for the safety of children."

Sushma SV, homemaker and parent pointed out apart from GPS system, every school management must do a background check of the people involved during the school transport. "Every school management must do a background check about the driver especially if the person holds any criminal records. An assistant must be deputed in the school bus by the management for the safety of the children especially those below 10 years."
