Master Hirannaiah to return to stage after one and a half years

One of the highly acclaimed artists, Master Hirannaiah, famous for his plays on political satires, is all set to return to stage after one and a half year long sabbatical. He will be performing on May 27 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Malleshwaram.

Amid rumours that this might be his last performance before he retires from theatre, Master Hirannaiah told iamin that he had agreed to act in the play because of the cause for which Mahila Dakshata Samithi, a non-governmental organisation is working for. "It will be my first appearance on stage after one-and-half years. I have not accepted offers during the last 18 months since I underwent a surgery in my spinal chord. I am not saying that it will be my last performance. I may perform in the future if my health permits,'' he said.

Hirannaiah, 81, was caught in the eye of a controversy, after he was accused of using uncomplimentary words against Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah. The incident sparked an outrage among the chief minister's supporters who ransacked the venue where he staged a play. Despite personally apologising to Siddaramaiah, he announced his retirement post his last play.

Hirannaiah will be presenting the latest version of his popular plays Lanchavatara and Makmal Topi in support of Mahila Dakshata Samiti. The money raised from the play will fund the various projects taken up by the NGO that works for upliftment of women and children. Lanchavatara, a dynamic play which reflects the hypocrisy and corruption of the government, has got international recognition. The show has been staged more than 11,000 times, creating a world record.

While Lanchavatara is a political satire, Makmal Topi depicts the common problems faced by the Indian society. It is a commentary on the political situation with a tinge of humour to regale the crowd. The show will also include performances by Prahlad Achar and Ramnath V. Y. Gundurao who will be complimenting the event with magic and comedy programmes respectively.

The tickets for the show are available on Bookmyshow.com and at select locations like Ajantha Hotel on MG Road, Super Market at 5th Avenue on Brigade Road, Mantri Square Mall in Malleswaram, Chairman’s Club in Sahakaranagar, Sapna Book House in Jayanagar and Century Club in Cubbon Park.
