The Udupi district police, who were worried over the silence of the Manipal rape victim, are relieved after the victim sent words through her counsel that she was willing to talk to the police investigators and would cooperate with them.

According to the inspector general of police (Western range) Pratap Reddy, who has been camping in Udupi ever since the incident of rape was reported, confirmed that the victim had finally agreed to talk, which might help them in completing the investigations.

In another development, the police arrested Balachandra and  Harindra Narayan Poojary, relatives of Yogish and Hariprasad, the prime accused in the case, for tampering with the evidence. Balachandra is brother of Yogish, who worked as a taxi driver. Narayan Poojary was brother of Hariprasad.

Balachandra and Narayan Poojary had washed off the blood stains on the autorickshaw that was used for abducting the victim to the crime scene and back to her accommodation. They had even changed the idol of Ganesha with that of Radhakrishna, which was found in the autorickshaw.

The enhanced video footage got from the camera surveillance showed Ganesha idol, but to cover the tracks of their brothers, Narayan Poojary and Balachandra changed the idol.

“These changes were made during the three days when the autorickshaw was still in the control of the accused and their relatives,” superintendent of police Udupi Dr Boralingaiah told dna.

Officers at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Bangalore managed to collect the blood samples available on the autorickshaw through extensive work despite the tampering.

The forensic report is expected soon, and the charge sheet will be filed soon after, Dr Boralingaiah said. Efforts are also on to extend the police custody of Hariprasad by five days.
Meanwhile, condition of Yogish, who was being treated at Kasturba hospital in Manipal after consuming a poisonous substance, has worsened.

“It will not have an bearing on the course of investigation should something happen to him,” Reddy said.
