Police on Thursday arrested Yogish, the prime suspect in the sensational gang rape of a medical student here.

Yogish had been admitted to the hospital after he consumed pesticides to escape arrest, soon after he and his associates allegedly abducted and raped girl student from Kerala.

With the arrest of Yogish, all the three men who are suspected to have perpetrated the crime and destroying the evidence of the crime are now in the police net.

Social activists and academics are now awaiting the national commission for women (NCW) to direct the government to entrust the case to the fast track court.

The Kerala State Women’s Commission has already recommended to chief minister Oommen Chandy to ask his Karnataka counterpart to advise the home ministry to fast track the trial.

“The accused have to be given due punishment quickly, sending a message to society that crimes against women would be treated with zero tolerance,” Rosa Kutty, chairman of the commission told dna.

According to sources in the Kerala home department, the uncle of the victim has been asked to depose before Karnataka home minister KJ George to safeguard her privacy. Sources in Karnataka home ministry said the ministry would facilitate it if the Kerala home ministry so desired.
