MANGALORE: The police here have been flooded with requests to give armed security cover to the top hotels in Mangalore.

According to sources in the police intelligence, Hotel Taj Manjarun,  Hotel Moti Mahal and Gold Finch in Mangalore have requested armed security; while in Udupi, the beach resort 'Paradise Island', which is located at Malpe Beach, has also asked for security cover.

These hotels already have their private security cover; "but they are not armed," says banquet manager of one of the hotels in Mangalore city. He told DNA news on conditions of anonymity that the Federation of Associations of Hotels and Restaurants of India (FHARI) has taken a serious view of the attacks on hotels in Mumbai and these three hotels are the members of the Federation the sources told.

Following the requests the police have asked the hotels to immediately set up metal detectors and vehicle check facilities at their gates.

Police sources said that the district was faced with  severe shortage of staff,  but the reasons to provide security was so compelling following the attack on Taj hotel in Mumbai, that the cops have to grit their teeth and bear it for a while.
