Governor HR Bhardwaj on Thursday hoisted the largest national flag in India at the National Military Memorial.

The tri-colour, weighing at 31kg, measures 72ft by 48ft and is hoisted on a 210ft tall flag poll, which is also among the tallest in the country.

The tri-colour, which took about five minutes to hoist, will not be lowered even at sunset and special lighting at the foot of the pole makes the flag visible at all times.

“In India, some people don’t show respect to the national flag. In many government offices, the national flag is damaged and nobody bothers to replace them. We have to ensure that the sanctity of the flag is maintained,” Bhardwaj said.

“I call upon youngsters to prefer the armed forces over working in a corporate office,” he said.

Member of Parliament and vice-chairman of the National Military Memorial Trust, Rajeev Chandrashekar, said the National Military Memorial is unique as it is the first of its kind in India.

“It will be the first to have all the names of martyrs to be carved on stone. It is unique that it was built in partnership between the government, volunteers and donors. It has one of the largest monolithic stone Veeragallu; and will have India’s first museum and motivation hall dedicated to martyrs,” he said.
