Six persons who were killed in the Central African Republic (CAR), where political disturbances had led to a coup, included a fishermen from Hemmadi Village in Kundapur taluk Krishnaiah Mogaveera, 37. He was gunned down by the French soldiers when trying to come over to India following the coup. He is survived by his parents, wife and a son.

Krishnaiah had gone to the CAR as an employee in one of the pharmaceutical companies there.

“We do not know about the fate of his mortal remains as we were told by my elder son Shekar Mogaveera, in Mumbai, that the war between the rebels and the administration was still on and law and order had completely broken down in the country,” said Krishnaiah’s wailing father Narayan Mogaveera.

“He had called us a week back to inform that he would return home for good this time as the political uncertainty was too much in that country.”

Speaking to DNA from Mumbai Shekar Mogaveera said: “We were anxious about the body of my brother. I was not able to contact anyone in that country despite going through proper channels. It was already two days since he had been dead and we don’t even know about the condition of the body.”

Anand Mogaveera, Krishnaiah’s elder brother said: “Despite the news being circulated in the district, none of the district officials have given us any support. But our community people (Mogaveera-coastal fishermen) have rushed to Hemmady and have offered help and support.”

Sathish Tandel, a local fishermen leader, had established contact with another migrant in Chad only to know that Chad had closed its borders with CAR.

Krishnaiah and seven others had ventured out and arrived at the Bangui Airport to enquire if there was any flight going out of CAR towards Tanzania, Chad or Congo from where they could get regular flights to India. But the French troops guarding the airport mistook the group for terrorists and opened fire and killed all of them.
