A group of kite-flyers from the Coast, called ‘Team Mangalore’, are all set to fly their kites in the skies of Hong Kong during the two-day International Kite festival that will begin on October 13.

“This is the first time that we have got an invitation from an international kite flying festival to represent India as its official kite flyer’s group, and we are proud of it,” said Sarvesh Rao, the team-leader.

“The Hong Kong kite festival will be held at Waterfront Park, Cyberfort, and it is the dream of every kite flyer in the world to fly their kites there. We consider ourselves lucky to represent India in the prestigious festival,” Rao said.

“Only three countries have been invited to participate in the festival, and since this is the first kite festival being organised in Honk Kong, it is an honour to showcase Indian ethos there,” he said.

The team plans to showcase a variety of kites at the festival, which includes Kathakkali, the largest kite in India, and other kites such as Yakshagaana, Durga, Charlie, Owl, Gajaraja, Pushpaka Vimana, Bird, Bee Eater, Bat Series, Bharthnatyam, Volcano, etc. This apart, the team will also showcase its new creations — Garuda, Devil Delta and Butterfly.

Apart from Rao, Team Mangalore comprises Prashant Upadhyaya, Subhash Pai, Dinesh Holla and Shashank Shetty.

Earlier, the team had participated in kite festivals held in Canada, UK, France, Thailand, Korea, Dubai, Qatar, Sri Lanka and Italy.

Its new creation Garuda received accolades in France and Italy. The team had also won the first place in the unique design category at Udaipur International Kite Festival for their kite Pushpaka Vimana in the Unidentified Flying Object category.
