Minister for BWSSB and urban development, S Suresh Kumar, said the state government has sought Rs2,379 crore from the Centre for a project to provide drinking water and underground drainage (UGD) system to 110 villages around Bangalore.

“These villages have been brought under the jurisdiction of BBMP. The projects will be taken up as soon as the Union government releases funds,” Suresh Kumar stated in a written reply to a query from JD(S) MLC M Srinivas in the legislative council during the recent session.

Srinivas had questioned what actions were being taken to  address the severe drinking water problem in the villages around Bangalore.

Responding to the same, Kumar said in a written reply that the BWSSB was managing about 12,399 borewells from which water was being supplied to areas where there was shortage.

He added that to control fleecing by private water tankers, the BBMP has issued circulars with guidelines for private tankers to have a valid RTO registration and permit, the source of water should be mentioned and the price they charge should be displayed on lorry/tractor etc.

Kumar’s written reply also stated that those charging exorbitant rate for supplying water would be penalised if the matter is brought to the notice of the BWSSB.

The state government has sent a proposal to the Union government to convert 23 state highways into national highways that have the network of 4,382 kilometres in Karnataka, said chief minister Jagadish Shettar.
