Karnataka High Court summons Pollution Control Board officials

The Karnataka High Court has summoned the officials of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board in a public interest litigation for high noise pollution levels in various parts of the City. While hearing a suo motto petition initiated by the court on rising noise levels, the division bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice H G Ramesh directed either the Board chairman or member secretary should be present on the next date of hearing.

During the hearing the bench said that there should be regulation to track the noise levels so that some guidelines can be issued on this regard. The bench also directed the board to check in if there are any places for strict monitoring and why such monitoring is not happening regularly. The bench also said that if nothing can be done regarding this issue, either the board's chairman or member secretary should be present for the next hearing. To this the counsel for the Pollution Control Board said that the member secretary will be present.

The court also asked for areas that have been declared as silent zones. During the hearing, the amicus curiae appointed by the court Advocate Vidyulatha submitted said that those places marked as silent zones are much noisier than normal zones. The counsel for Pollution control board then said that for a period of one month from May 24 to June 25, 3.37 lakh have been collected as fine. They also said that artificial horns and silencers also have been seized.

The amicus curiae also submitted that there is huge problem due to the BMTC buses. She said that buses never stop at the bus stops and due to this many vehicles stand behind one another. This also creates pollution. The bench then asked the transport department to ensure that the buses to stop at the required bus stop. She also said that the brakes of these buses also generates pollution. The court then directed the transport department to file an affidavit on what they will do to maintain the noise levels of BMTC buses.
