The Karnataka High Court directed the state government to hold elections to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) before August 5 as directed by the Supreme Court.

The Single Judge bench headed by Justice Nagarathna also imposed Rs 10,000 penalty for wasting High Court’s time. Justice Nagarathna said that holding elections to the BBMP Council is inevitable in the wake of Supreme Court’s directive to the state government. Justice Nagarathna had directed the State Election Commission to announce the schedule for the BBMP Council polls. The BBMP Council term had expired on April 22.

Meanwhile, a BJP delegation led by MLA S Suresh Kumar met State Election Commissioner Sreenivasachary and requested him to hold the elections to the BBMP Council as early as possible. According to reliable sources, a meeting has been convened by the State Election Commissioner to discuss the preparations for BBMP Council elections.

It may be recalled that the Supreme Court on May 5 had directed the Karnataka Government to hold elections to the BBMP Council within three months. Four BJP former corporators and Rajya MP Rajeev  Chandrasekhar filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Karnataka Government to hold the elections to the BBMP Council. The Congress government led by Siddaramaiah has been delaying the elections to the BBMP Council on one or the other pretext since then.

The state government had convened an emergency session of the State legislature on April 20 to discuss a Bill on the trifurcation of the BBMP. The State Assembly had passed the Bill but the government received a setback when it failed to sail through in the Legislative Council where Congress did not get any support. Finally, the Bill was referred to the House Committee.
