Even as electronic dance music icons Above & Beyond were performing at Marathahalli on Friday evening, a bunch of aspiring musicians were showing off their stuff at a garage jam on Brigade Road. Bangalore is not called The Rock Capital of India without a reason.

Friday Garage Jams at Sonido musical store on Brigade Road are fairly well known in the city’s music circuit. The jam provides a platform to upcoming bands to roll out their songs. City-based band Quarantine is a case in point. They got their break at the Garage Jam, which was a stepping stone to success. Recently, they finished second at the music competition of the prestigious Strawberry Fields, the cultural extravaganza of National Law School of India University.

This Friday too saw a host of upcoming bands performing at the Garage Jam to a small, but appreciative, audience.

“I am a lover of rock music and I come here almost every Friday to watch the bands playing. This is the best place to spend an evening because you get to listen to your favourite songs,” said Kaif, a student.

“It is more like a motivation for youngsters to form their band and perform for events. Garage Jam provides very good equipment and that is one reason why people come back to this place to play music. They organise events to pay tribute to the renowned bands like Megadeth and Slayer, which pulls in a big crowd,” said another regular at the jam, Satish.

Quite a few city-based bands have gained recognition within the Bangalore crowd owing to this place. “When I formed my band, I did not have a proper place to experiment with my music. So I started Garage Jam to serve as a platform for the aspirants of rock to come and play their music and experiment freely. About two to three bands play here every Friday, keeping the crowd engaged with some really good music,” said Arwine, organizer of Garage Jam.

“We have been playing at a couple of fests as well as Garage Jam. We have played at Garage Jam twice and it is always nice to get positive response and encouragement from the crowd here.” said Aashish, vocalist of Vulpine Audacity.
