The park inside the premises of SDS Tuberculosis and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Disease at Jayanagar, 1st block, has been laying in a state of dismay since the past few years. The residents who were maintaining the park for these many years have decided to take up a massive protest against the civic agency to take up maintenance.

The government had allotted Rs30 lakh for the development of the park spread over five acres. However, neither the hospital nor the BBMP has taken up maintenance. Residents stated that during the park’s inauguration, BBMP authorities had claimed that they will maintain the park.

Jayanagar Residents’ Welfare Civic and Cultural Association president Keshava Kumar N said that a retired government officer, MR Ashok and other residents have taken up the maintenance work by paying money to a gardener to water the plants on a weekly basis.

“But it is troublesome as there is no one to guard the park. Due to lack of proper maintenance, the plants are dying and also due to lack of security, all the electrical fittings like the lights, the submersible pump in the fountain and all the sprinkler pipes are stolen. It has also become a joint for drunkards during evening times,” Keshava Kumar said.

The park is situated in the Jayanagar ward, where Gangambike Mallikarjuna is the corporator, while the residential areas is in Byrasandra Ward, where N Nagaraju is the corporator. The residents have given their memorandum to both the corporators, but no action has been initiated. “We have decided to take up the protest next week in front of the park and demand immediate action for the maintenance,” Kumar added.

Meanwhile, BBMP south zone horticulture superintendent, Nagappa Attorkar said it is a state government property and does not come under BBMP. “The park comes under the state horticulture department... Unless there is any direction from BBMP commissioner, we do not have the authority to take up the maintenance of park as it does not come under our jurisdiction,” he said.
