Infosys, Wipro set tone for global meet

Yeddyurappa government approves three facilities to be set up by the two IT majors in Bangalore.

The state scored yet another success in the IT sector on Monday, when it approved two mega greenfield software development centre proposals of Infosys Technologies; another one from Wipro also found approval. All these are to come up in Bangalore.

The State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLC) headed by chief minister BS Yeddyurappa approved the Rs2,250 crore investment proposal of Infosys to set up one of the biggest software development centres, spread over an area of 365 acres, on Sarjapur Road. The land is already owned by Infosys. The software centre would provide employment to about 18,000 techies.

Another project of Infosys at Devanahalli, with an investment of Rs710 crore, was also approved. It would come up in an area of 40 acres of land allotted by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board, large and medium industries minister Murugesh Nirani said on Monday.

The Wipro software centre proposal involves investment of Rs537 crore; it will employ about 25,000 techies. The project will be implemented in a 50-acre plot already owned by the company at Kodathi village on Sarjapur Road.

In all, the SHLC approved 60 project proposals with a total investment of Rs58,517 crore, and employment potential for 3.07 lakh persons. The proposals included one in the aerospace sector, four gas-based energy projects, six non-conventional energy projects, four thermal energy projects, three IT projects and 10 in the iron and steel sector.

Processed foods major Nestle India has decided to set up its Rs350 crore instant noodles and condiments manufacturing unit in Mysore. It is expected to provide employment for about 630 persons and start production within one year.

The state government has approved a gold exploration project from Deccan Exploration Services at Ganjur village in Haveri district with an investment of Rs220 crore.

The committee also approved the Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Cements proposal to set up a mega cement plant of 5 million tons per annum in Chitradurga district. It involved an investment of Rs2,500crore, Nirani said.

Referring to the impending Global Investors’ Meet (GIM) to be held at Palace Grounds, Bangalore on June 3 and 4, Nirani said that already over 400 investment proposals had been finalised for signing the MoU. In all over 800 MoUs would be signed during the GIM, the minister said.

He said that water and power would not be a problem for the new investors. Power projects had been initiated to generate over 12,000MW in the next three years. As for water, it would be met from Almatti reservoir in northern Karnataka. Rain Water Harvesting would be mandatory. 

Meanwhile, the single-window agency of the industries and
commerce department has cleared 74 small and medium projects with a total investment of Rs1,670cr and employment potential over  20,000.
