With the objective of ensuring that no small arms were brought inside the Vidhana Soudha by personal security officers of politicians, police are in the process of shifting doorframe metal scanners outside the premises.

So far, the scanners through which the visitors pass to gain entry into Vidhana Soudha were located inside the Soudha. A report in DNA had pointed out the dangers of locating the scanners inside the building, posing grave danger to it by potential human bombers or suicidal attackers.

Friday evening, the public works department (PWD) engineers were seen busy marking the locations at four sides of the Vidhana Soudha for the construction of structures to accommodate scanning machines.

“We expect the four scanners to be shifted to these places within a few days,’’ said a police inspector on condition of anonymity.

The police have imposed a ban on carrying weapons by security guards of politicians inside Vidhana Soudha in the backdrop of recent Hyderabad blasts.

“As of now four scanners are placed inside the premises. The baggage of visitors is being scanned after they enter the premises. Now, the higher authorities have taken the decision to shift the scanners to ensure scanning of baggage of visitors much before they enter the premises,’’ said the police inspector.

The DNA report had emphasised the need to shift the scanners outside the premises, warning that anyone can carry explosives and small firearms inside the premises where the scanners are placed without any hassles since not much scanning was being done at the four entry points of Vidhana Soudha.

Till recently, there were no doorframe metal detectors at the two outer gates (put up at Dr Ambedkar Veedhi and from Legislature Home side) of Vidhana Soudha. A senior police officer, who worked at Vidhana Soudha a few years ago, also pinpointed the shortage of hand-held detectors and shortage of the police for Vidhana Soudha security.
